Bilingual and Multilingual Texts
The structure of the Tibetan script includes ascenders, descenders, subscripts, and other marks and diacritics which must be taken into consideration when choosing point sizes and especially when mixing English text. Whereas 10 or 12 point text in English provides optimal on-screen and printed legibility with most text faces, the corresponding Tibetan text may need to be larger. This is particularly true of the on-screen display.
Tibetan fonts have a level of complexity that cannot be adequately represented on-screen in all typefaces at small sizes like 10 and 12 point. For this reason these smaller font sizes are not recommended.
Because of the extended depth of the Tibetan script, many compliant applications display Tibetan text with unusually large leading. This is particularly true now during the nascent stage of Unicode software development. And, to date, we are not aware of any application that will allow the user to modify this but we suspect that this will be a natural addition in future software development. Until then, we hope to release a version of the font that will help compensate for this.
